The 156km Sambalpur - Angul line was electrified at a cost of Rs 1.83bn ($US 26.3m), removing the need for locomotive changes at Angul.
The Times of India reported that five services operated with electric traction on May 18, with other regular services also due to switch from diesel to electric.
Along with passenger services, the line primarily carries raw materials such as coal, aluminium and cement bound for Tamil Nadu and the west of India.
