THE People's Council of An Giang province in southern Vietnam approved Phase 1 of a light rail project on Phu Quoc island on October 24.

The public-private partnership (PPP) project is expected to cost Dong 9 trillion ($US 342m). Implementation is planned from the fourth quarter of 2025 to the second quarter of 2027 in time for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum summit, which will be held in Phu Quoc in November 2027.

The operating contract will run for a maximum of 40 years from the date of handover and commissioning.

The line will be about 17.7km long with between five and seven stations, plus a depot. The LRVs will have between three and five sections with a design speed of 70-100km/h.
