TORONTO’s $C 3.7bn ($US 2.68bn) light rail Line 6, also known as Finch West LRT, opened to passengers on December 7. The 10.3km line serves 18 stops, running from Finch West on TTC metro Line 1 (Yonge - University) to Humber Polytechnic’s North Campus at Humber College.
A fleet of 18 Alstom Citadis LRVs are operating on a dedicated, mainly at-grade alignment along Finch Avenue West, with CBTC installed by Hitachi Rail. The line is projected to carry 12 million passengers a year by 2031, with an initial 51,000 passengers expected to use the line each weekday.
LRVs operate during weekday morning and afternoon rush hours at intervals of six-and-a-half minutes. At all other times, including weekends, the frequency is 10-12 minutes.
“The Finch West LRT will give hundreds of thousands of commuters more options to get where they need to go and help protect Ontario by connecting more workers to good-paying jobs,” says Prabmeet Sarkaria, Ontaria’s minister of transportation.
