SOUND Transit has celebrated the opening of a 5.4km extension of Line 2, running from the previous terminus at Redmond Technology and adding two new stations at Marymoor Village and Downtown Redmond.
The initial 10.6km line that runs northeast from South Bellevue to Redmond Technology opened on April 27 2024. The final 6.4km section of Line 2, which will run west from South Bellevue across Lake Washington to International District/Chinatown in the city centre via Mercer Island and Judkins Park, is also scheduled to open within the next 12 months.
Sound Transit says the entire $US 1.5bn Line 2 project is running to schedule. The Downtown Redmond extension is the first to be completed using funding secured through the Sound Transit 3 ballot measure approved by voters in 2016.
The Line 2 service is operating every 10 minutes daily from 05.30 to 21.30. The station at Marymoor Village includes a park and ride facility with capacity for up to 1400 vehicles.
Design and construction of the extension was led by a joint venture of Stacy Witbeck and Kuney. Siemens Mobility has supplied Sound Transit with 152 S700 two-section LRVs under a contract signed in 2016.
“With the opening of Downtown Redmond Link, Sound Transit now operates 74km of light rail across all three counties we serve,” says Snohomish county executive and Sound Transit board chair, Dave Somers. “This system creates more connections and economic opportunities for people who live, work in, and visit our region.”
