THE government of Punjab province in Pakistan has approved a project to build an 11km light rail line in Lahore, the provincial capital, at an estimated cost of Rs 27bn ($US 97m).
Lahore is Pakistan’s second-largest city, with a population of over 13 million.
Approval was granted during a meeting chaired by the chief minister of Punjab, Ms Maryam Nawaz, who stressed the need to complete the project quickly. The official launch date is expected to be announced shortly.
The new line will have stops located at intervals of 1-1.5km, serving key locations such as Liberty, Main Market, Mini Market and Hali Road. A dedicated stop will serve the Gaddafi Stadium, the home of Pakistan’s national cricket team.
The project will also involve converting M M Alam Road to one-way traffic in order to accommodate the new light rail line.
According to local media reports, LRVs from suppliers in China and Finland are under consideration as the rolling stock fleet for the new line.
