THE Shenzhen Development and Reform Commission in China has released tender documents for a contract to undertake a pilot study of a second cross-border high-speed line to connect Shenzhen with Hong Kong.
The new line would be a southern extension of the planned second high-speed line from Guangzhou to Shenzhen, running from Guangzhou North station via Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and central Dongguan to Shenzhen Airport East station.
The second high-speed line between Guangzhou and Shenzhen was approved by China’s National Development and Reform Commission in May 2020 as part of infrastructure plans for the Greater Bay Area encompassing Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao.
The extension would run from Shenzhen Airport East via Bao’an, Nanshan and Qianhai to the Northern Metropolis and the Lautau Tomorrow Vision development project in Hong Kong.
The pilot study will include assessing the business case for building the new line, evaluating potential demand and taking into consideration land use along the proposed route. Outline construction plans would also be developed.
According to the tender documents, the existing 350km/h high-speed line between Shenzhen and Hong Kong might reach full capacity without the construction of a second line to relieve it.
