INFRASTRUCTURE manager Italian Rail Network (RFI) has brought into service the 18km Cancello - Frasso Telesino-Dugenta section of the Naples - Bari high-speed/high-capacity line, the second section of this project to be commissioned after Bovino - Cervaro.
The latest double-track section includes the 4km Monte Aglio tunnel and eight viaducts, and in upgrading the existing line for high-speed services 13 level crossings were removed. Work was undertaken by the CFT Consortium of Pizzarotti, Itinera, and Ghella, with project supervision undertaken by FS Engineering (formerly Italferr).
RFI reports that the 3km between San Lorenzo Maggiore and Ponte Casalduni has also opened, the first part of the Telese - Vitulano section of Naples - Bari high-speed line to be completed. Work here was undertaken by the Telese Scarl consortium of Ghella, Itinera, Salcef and Coget Impianti.
Currently under construction by the Nacav consortium led by Webuild, the Naples - Cancello section is due to be commissioned in June. This will be followed in December 2026 by the Frasso Telesino - Telese section which is being built by the Frasso Scarl consortium of Pizzarotti, Ghella and Itinera.
Designed for operation at up to 250km/h, the 145km Naples - Bari high-speed line is expected to cost €5.8bn in total. When completed, it will cut the fastest journey time between Naples and Bari to 2 hours and Rome - Bari to 3 hours.
