CHINA’s National Development and Reform Commission has approved the construction of two new high-speed lines, including a new line for operation at up to 350km/h that will run for 222km from Qianjiang to Jishou in central western China.
The new line will run from Qianjiang on the Chongqing - Xiamen high-speed line to Jishou North, via intermediate stations at Youyang West and Xiushan North. It will complete 350km/h infrastructure between Chongqing and Changsha via Huaihua, where it will connect with the east-west Shanghai - Kunming line. Construction is expected to start in September and take five years to complete at a cost of Yuan 44.8bn ($US 6.49bn).
In eastern China, the 515km Nanyang - Xinyang - Hefei high-speed line with 11 stations has been approved. The project includes 390km of new construction and will also make use of the 125km Hefei - Wuhan section of the Yangtze River high-speed line that is currently under construction.
Running broadly east-west, the new line will enable faster services between Nanyang, Xinyang and Shanghai, avoiding Zhengzhou and Wuhan. The fastest Nanyang - Shanghai journey time is expected to be cut from 6h 30min to 5h 30mim, and Xinyang - Shanghai from 4h 30min to 3h 42min. Construction is expected to cost Yuan 68.1bn and take five years to complete.
