HIGH-speed infrastructure manager Adif AV has awarded a €391m contract to undertake civil works on the initial 8.4km Pancorbo - Ameyugo section of the high-speed line between Burgos and Vitoria in northern Spain. The name of the winning bidder was not disclosed.
Adif AV says that the construction of the alignment for the double-track high-speed line will present new technical and engineering challenges, given that 77% will run either in tunnel or on viaduct. There will be a total of three tunnels and three viaducts.
At Pancorbo, a 4km tunnel opens out onto a 1.1km viaduct crossing the N1 highway, the SC-BU-7 road and the La Llosa river. The central span of the new viaduct will be supported by two v-shaped piers either side of the N1.
Other major structures include the 611m-long Ameyugo I tunnel and Ameyugo II (524m), as well as viaducts over the La Mala river (28m) and crossing the N1. The project also includes the construction of a single-track section bypassing Mirando de Ebro.
Construction of the Burgos -Vitoria high-speed has been divided into seven sections. Following the award of the civil works contract for Pancorbo - Ameyugo, Adif AV says that design work is continuing for the remaining six sections:
- Burgos - Valle de las Navas
- Valle de las Navas - Piérnigas
- Piérnigas - Pancorbo
- Ameyugo - Manzanos and integration work at Miranda de Ebro
- Manzanos - La Puebla de Arganzón, and
- La Puebla de Arganzón - Iruña de Oca.
Connecting with the under-construction Basque Y project at Vitoria, the Burgos - Vitoria line will complete 1435mm-gauge infrastructure between Madrid and the French border at Irún. It will form part of the Atlantic Corridor of the European Union’s (EU) Trans-European Transport (TEN-T) network, making it eligible for co-funding from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
