GERMAN Rail (DB) has announced the appointment of Heiko Büttner as CEO of S-Bahn Berlin with effect from April 1. His current position as head of S-Bahn Munich will be taken over by Dr Matthias Glaub, who is returning to Munich from Stuttgart. Nina Hutwagner will succeed Glaub as the new CEO of S-Bahn Stuttgart.
Büttner has held several management positions with DB Regio and DB Sales during his 30-year career with DB. Since 2017, he has headed S-Bahn Munich during which time he successfully concluded the first S-Bahn Munich contract with Bavaria. Since 2024, Büttner has also been the DB's representative for Bavaria. However, he will now step down from this position, although a successor for this role has not yet been named.
Glaub has been with DB for more than 20 years. After holding management positions at DB Cargo, DB Network, and DB Sales, he spent seven years as head of human resources at S-Bahn Munich. In Stuttgart, as chairman of the management board, he led the S-Bahn back to a full timetable through a successful recruitment drive. Most recently, with the first test runs of an S-Bahn train equipped with ETCS and highly automated control, Glaub set an important milestone on the path to future digital train operation.
As head of timetable and traffic control in Frankfurt am Main, Hutwagner was responsible for nationwide long-distance traffic management and strategic development. She also represented the interests of long-distance services in the task force for a reliable railway project, commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Transport. Thanks to her extensive experience in organising daily long-distance operations, Hutwagner brings a deep understanding of train operation and the implementation of ETCS on high-speed lines to the Stuttgart S-Bahn network which DB says will be invaluable in the upcoming transition to the Stuttgart Digital Hub (DKS).
DB Regio
DB is also making changes in the regional management of DB Regio. Heike Junge-Latz, board member for asset and maintenance management at DB InfraGo, has been named as chairwoman of regional management for Baden-Württemberg. She succeeds Markus Kaupper who has been appointed chair of the North Rhine-Westphalia regional management. He in turn succeeds Frederik Ley, who was appointed to the DB Regio management board at the beginning of the year.
