BADEN-Würrtemberg, in southwestern Germany, will receive nearly €195m of federal funding to install onboard ETCS equipment on rolling stock operating public service obligation (PSO) services and owned by state leasing company SFBW. The state of Baden-Württemberg is also contributing €70m to the project, which involves fitting ETCS to 118 Flirt 3 and Talent 3 EMUs.
In addition, Stuttgart’s regional transport authority will receive €144m of federal funding to equip 215 class 430 EMUs deployed on the city’s S-Bahn network.
"By retrofitting the vehicles, we are demonstrating that we are serious about the railway of the future," says Baden-Württemberg transport minister, Winfried Hermann.
Equipping the Stuttgart S-Bahn fleet with ETCS is a key part of the Stuttgart Digital Nodes (DKS) project, which will install ETCS and ATO on 125km of track in the Stuttgart metropolitan area, in conjunction with the Stuttgart 21 project to build a new underground station replacing the current terminus.
