THE German state of North Rhine-Westphalia has agreed to finance €305m of the €836m total cost of rebuilding Line S11 of the Cologne S-Bahn. The federal government will provide the remaining €531m through grant funding as part of the planned national public transport investment programme.
The most significant and costly part of the project is the addition of two new tracks to serve new platforms at both Cologne’s main station and Cologne Messe/Deutz on the opposite side of the River Rhine. At Cologne main station, the 215m-long platforms will be built on viaduct above the existing Breslauer Platz entrance. The new platforms will be used by S-Bahn services, primarily westbound trains heading to Cologne Hansaring.
The project also includes track doubling of the 4.1km Cologne-Dellbrück - Bergisch Gladbach section of Line S11. A new station at Cologne Kalk West will be added east of Cologne Messe/Deutz, which will be served by several S-Bahn lines.
