THE potential of train travel across Europe is immense - an untapped opportunity estimated at €5-10bn in additional ticket sales annually. Yet, the true barriers to unlocking this potential aren’t merely about infrastructure, rolling stock, or investment. They are about transforming the customer experience and reshaping perceptions of rail travel.
Recently, through a survey conducted with over 150 participants, we gained fresh insights into what travellers value and where they see opportunities for improvement. The results underscore a shared goal: to make rail the first choice for all.
A call for reliability and punctuality
For 62% of respondents, reliability and punctuality stood out as decisive factors in choosing rail. These numbers highlight an area that demands collective action across the industry.
While trains often perform well, delays on high-demand routes, or seasonal disruption on mountain lines due to extreme weather events, can disproportionately impact perception. Stories of missed connections or longer-than-expected journeys linger in passengers’ minds, even when the broader reality tells a more positive story, and trains perform well most of the time.
This isn’t about pointing fingers at specific operators or routes - it’s about embracing these challenges as opportunities for improvement. Across Europe, operators, regulators, suppliers, and governments must collaborate to enhance passenger experience.
At Rail Europe, customer service is rooted in listening and adapting to customer feedback, ensuring our strategies remain responsive and customer-centric. Our global support hub has specialised teams focusing on specific rail operators or requirements, enabling them to provide tailored and expert assistance to meet diverse customer needs. We focus on creating exceptional customer service, such as seamless rebooking during disruption, turning potential frustration into confidence-building moments.
Simplifying the journey
A key takeaway from the survey was that 28% of respondents found booking and journey planning unnecessarily complex. This aligns with Rail Europe’s mission to make train travel easy.
Passengers want a full overview of all the possibilities, not fragmented glimpses. By integrating smarter digital tools, transparent pricing, and seamless cross-border connections, we aim to go beyond merely selling tickets. We want to craft journeys that are intuitive, straightforward, and reflective of the unparalleled opportunities that rail offers.
Accessibility and inclusivity
Accessibility - physical, digital, and experiential - received attention from 5% of respondents, a relatively small number. However, for those who need these services, the impact is profound.
It’s a reminder that inclusivity isn’t about numbers but equality. We must design systems that work for everyone, from those with reduced mobility to families travelling with young children. Every improvement in this area reinforces rail’s position as the most welcoming and inclusive mode of travel.
Rethinking onboard services
Interestingly, only 5% of respondents highlighted onboard services as a top priority. However, this remains an area of untapped innovation.
Today, we think of onboard services in terms of coffee and newspapers. Tomorrow, these could evolve into immersive experiences with smart ordering systems to purchase food and drinks from personal devices, as well as virtual reality, gaming, augmented reality experiences overlaying information about the passing scenery or local attractions, and more personalised digital solutions. By thinking beyond traditional offerings, we can elevate rail travel from a mode of transport to a uniquely enriching journey.
Price and affordability: changing the narrative
The issue of pricing was not specifically addressed in the survey, but this silence speaks volumes. Affordability remains a key consideration, especially when rail is juxtaposed against subsidised air travel or car journeys.
However, the challenge isn’t merely the cost itself. It’s about addressing the perception of affordability by leveraging untapped opportunities:
- dynamic pricing that rewards early bookings
- group fares and loyalty benefits for families, corporate clients, and frequent travellers
- educating passengers on booking horizons to get cheaper fares, and
- highlighting rail’s value as an investment in sustainabilityfor the planet and individuals.
We need to educate travellers about these options, reframing rail not as expensive, but as a flexible and rewarding choice.
The future is collaborative
Rail’s future lies in shared innovation and a collective vision. From operational reliability to digital transformation, accessibility to affordability, we must act boldly to address today’s challenges and anticipate tomorrow’s opportunities.
The potential of rail travel is vast, and by working together, we can transform it into a smarter, greener, and more inclusive future. One step at a time, we can make rail the world’s preferred way to explore, connect, and thrive.
