The service has been launched under a Memorandum of Understanding
signed last October by the Turkish and Iraqi High Level Strategic
Cooperation Council. Rail services between Syria and Iraq were
suspended in 1982 during the Iran-Iraq War.

The restoration of
services on this route comes less than two months after Turkey and
Syria reopened the Çobanbey border crossing, which had been closed
since 1981.
