LEASING company Alpha Trains has placed an order with Stadler for 25 additional Euro6000 multi-system electric locomotives, expanding its fleet to 92 units.
The order includes 10 1668mm Iberian-gauge and 15 1435mm-gauge locomotives. The locomotives are designed to operate on 1.5kV dc, 3kV dc and 25kV ac overhead lines at speeds of up to 120km/h.
The Iberian-gauge units are intended to support the continued development of Spain and Portugal’s rail freight market, while the standard-gauge locomotives will be deployed on the Mediterranean Corridor, providing cross-border freight operations between Spain, France, Belgium and Luxembourg.
Stadler’s Valencia plant has supplied more than 150 locomotives to the leasing company since 2007, signing its first order for the Euro6000 in 2019. Delivery of the latest batch is scheduled for 2028.
The six-axle locomotives have a power output of 6MW and Stadler says they are capable of hauling freight trains weighing more than 2000 tonnes on steep gradients while maintaining competitive operating speeds. The multi-system capability enables operation across different electrification systems, reducing the need for locomotive changes at national borders.
