EUROPEAN rolling stock leasing company Alpha Trains has confirmed the acquisition of up to 70 Vectron locomotives from Siemens Mobility. The announcement follows the signing of a framework agreement in July, which includes an initial order for 35 locomotives.
The agreement covers several Vectron locomotive variants, including multi-system MS and dual-mode units, which will enhance Alpha Trains’ existing fleet. These locomotives have a maximum power output of 6.4MW and a top speed of 200km/h.
The Vectrons will be manufactured at Siemens Mobility’s Munich-Allach plant, with the first delivery expected by late 2026.
Notably, the order includes the first Vectron multi-system locomotives for France. They will also be able to operate in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and optionally Luxembourg.
In addition, the existing service contract between Alpha Trains and Siemens Mobility, signed in 2023, has been amended to extend maintenance coverage to the new fleet in Belgium and France. Alpha Trains says this strategic move underscores its commitment to expand its presence in the French market.
“There is a growing demand from our existing and new customers for efficient and state-of-the-art multi-system locomotives,” says Mr Vincent Pouyet, managing director of the Locomotives Division of Alpha Trains. “With this latest order, we can ensure that our customers have the highest possible operational flexibility on all their routes with a proven and highly-available platform.”
