INFRASTRUCTURE manager Italian Rail Network (RFI) has completed the installation of ERTMS on more than 1400km of the national network. The project has been financed with €2.5bn from Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), funded by the European Union (EU).
Completion of this phase of ERTMS installation achieves the medium-term objective established by measure 1.4 of mission M3C1 of the PNRR for the development of ERTMS.
Under this programme, approximately 2800km must have ERTMS installed by June 2026, in line with the objective of extending ERTMS, already installed on high-speed lines, to the entire network managed by RFI. ERTMS had previously been installed on around 1200km of the Italian network.
The latest installation phase involved teams from Hitachi, Alstom, Mermec, Progress Rail, RFI and Italferr working on 21 lines totalling 1489km.
In the next phase, planned for later this year, RFI will install ERTMS on conventional lines, urban rail networks, and cross-border corridors throughout Italy.
On the Rome - Florence high-speed line, following work between Rovezzano and Orvieto, RFI says that ERTMS will be activated on the remaining 105km of the line to Settebagni, north of Rome, including connections to the conventional network.
