The most challenging element of the project involves quadrupling the 5km double-track line between Rijswijk, south of The Hague, and Delft South.

This includes quadrupling a 3400m-long tunnel under the centre of Delft which has two tracks at present but was prepared for four tracks when it was built - the tunnel opened in 2017.

The section between Delft South and Schiedam in Rotterdam is also double track, but quadrupling is not considered necessary at present, so the signalling will be modified instead to allow more trains to operate.

The project includes the replacement of the double-track bridge across the waterway at Het Haantje with a four-track bridge. In addition, a nearby level crossing will be eliminated.

Last year Prorail decided to build a new station at Delft South, which will have four platform tracks. The station will be energy neutral, the first in the Netherlands. Solar panels will generate power for lighting and other applications.

The project will take five years to complete.
