CHINA Railway (CR) is the sole corporate shareholder in Xinjiang-Xizang Railway, formed to build and operate a line from Hotan in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China to Shigatse and Lhasa in the Xizang or Tibet Autonomous Region.
According to the State Administration for Market Regulation, the new company was established on August 7 and is based in the Tibetan capital Lhasa. It has a registered capital of Yuan 95bn ($US 13.2bn) and its activities include construction and engineering supervision, railway infrastructure manufacturing, and railway operations, as well as catering and accommodation services, property development and tourism.
Speaking in April, Jin Jingdong, deputy director of the Comprehensive Planning Department at the Ministry of Transport, said that preliminary work on the new line is being accelerated. Initial surveying work has been completed and the objective is to start construction by the end of this year.
The new line from Xinjiang is one of five new railways planned to connect China with Tibet. Alongside the completed line from Qinghai, the Sichuan-Xizang Railway is under construction and new lines are planned from Gansu and Yunnan.
