A 4km cross-border line between Cantemir in southwestern Moldova and Fălciu in eastern Romania has re-opened following the completion of modernisation works.
Built in 1917, the line was used primarily for freight transport, but gradually fell into a state of disuse, with freight trains withdrawn in 1989 and passenger trains in 2009. The modernisation programme included the complete renewal of 1520mm and 1435mm dual gauge track and replacement of over 3000 sleepers, plus strengthening of the embankment at Prut.
The resumption of traffic on the Cantemir - Fălciu line is expected to contribute to the diversification of freight transport, providing Moldova with direct connection to European Union (EU) markets. It is also expected to become a catalyst for economic development in southern Moldova.
The completion of the infrastructure modernisation project follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by Moldovan Railways (CFM) and Romanian Railways (CFR) in April 2025 to develop freight traffic using the line and to explore the potential for passenger services.
