INDIA’s prime minister Narendra Modi officially opened an extension to Line 1 of the Kanpur Metro on May 30. The extension runs from Moti Jheel in a semi-circle south to Kanpur Central station.
The new section has extended the operational length of Line 1 to 16km and added intermediate stations at Chunniganj, Navin Market, Bada Chauraha and Nayaganj.
The initial section from IIT Kanpur to Moti Jheel opened in 2021. The line is being extended south from Kanpur Central to Naubasta, taking Line 1 to a total length of 32.4km.
Alstom is supplying 67 three-car trains to Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation which is responsible for the Kanpur, Agra and Lucknow metros. The first 40 trains are currently in service. The trains are equipped with Flexx bogies and Alstom’s Mitrac traction system which is designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce operating costs. The air-conditioned trains have automated sliding doors, dedicated areas for passengers with reduced mobility, and modern passenger information systems.
Alstom has also installed communications-based train control (CBTC) on Line 1.
