KAZAKHSTAN’s president, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, officially opened a second track on the 836km Dostyk - Moiynty line on September 30.
Speaking via video link during the seventh International Transport and Logistics Business Forum in Almaty, he highlighted the project’s strategic importance as a key component of the freight route between Kazakhstan and China.
“This is a truly historic moment, the result of diligent teamwork. The new line will increase freight traffic volumes fivefold, reduce delivery times for exports, and strengthen Kazakhstan’s transit potential,” he said.
According to local media outlet The Astana Times, Tokayev noted that Kazakhstan plans to build 5000km of new railways and refurbish 11,000km of track.
Digitalisation and artificial intelligence (AI) will be increasingly applied in the railway industry, Tokayev added, making it one of the leading sectors of Kazakhstan’s economy.
The Ministry of Transport points out that the Dostyk - Moiynty line is part of the smart railway concept currently being implemented in Kazakhstan. It includes AI-based train traffic management and schedule optimisation, infrastructure monitoring using sensors and drones, and a transition to predictive maintenance.
The initiative is expected to improve energy efficiency and reduce CO₂ emissions, automate logistics and container transport, improve railway safety and enable analysis of global transport flows and load forecasting along the Middle Corridor connecting China with-Europe via Kazakhstan.
