NETWORK Rail has appointed AtkinsRéalis to lead design integration for the 29km Stalybridge - Huddersfield section of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) project in northern England.

Under the eight-year lead design organisation framework contract, AkinsRéalis will provide integration and design services to Network Rail including engineering management, design integration, schedule integration, BIM and survey management. Work will involve the strengthening of up to 40 bridges, 62km of track renewals, and remodelling of four stations. The contract spans design through to construction.

Survey work on the Stalybridge - Huddersfield section is underway ahead of the start of the comprehensive upgrade work.

TRU involves electrifying and increasing the capacity of the main line linking Manchester, Huddersfield, Bradford, Leeds and York. The line has 9.6km of tunnels, many bridges and viaducts, and 29 level crossings. The project also includes building a new through station in Bradford.
