SIR Andrew Haines, chief executive of British infrastructure manager Network Rail (NR), has informed the NR board of his intention to retire in October, having joined the company in August 2018.
Haines joined NR from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) where he was chief executive. His rail industry experience includes the post of manging director of the UK Rail Division at FirstGroup, and managing director of passenger operator South West Trains (SWT).
The process to appoint his successor will begin shortly, led by the Nomination and Remuneration Committee of the NR board. The appointment will subject to the approval of the secretary of state for transport, Heidi Alexander.
As well as leading NR through the Covid-19 pandemic, Haines has led preliminary work to create Great British Railways (GBR), and more recently was appointed as head of Shadow GBR in September last year.
“Andrew has been an exceptional leader for NR at a critical time in the history of Britain’s railways,” says NR acting chair, Mike Putnam.
“He has secured reforms that will lead to a more reliable railway, while maintaining a continual focus on safety and performance.”
