CONSTRUCTION will begin this month on the second and final phase of the programme to expand the Vienna South intermodal terminal. The project will increase capacity by 44% from 380,000 to 547,000 TEU. Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) says it will meet increasing demand for intermodal services.
The project includes the addition of new tracks and turnouts to simplify train handling and to boost capacity at the facility.
Work includes the addition of a new automated gantry crane and upgrading the two existing cranes to automatic operation. A total of eight 700m loading tracks will be available upon completion of the project, which is expected by the end of 2026 for commissioning in 2027.
The terminal was constructed between 2013 and 2016 and is located at the intersection of the Vienna Outer Ring S1 expressway and the Pottendorf Line, providing access to three trans-European freight routes.
Vienna South is one of seven freight terminals owned by ÖBB in Austria. It is operated by Terminal Service Austria (TSA) and primarily handles containers, swap bodies, and unaccompanied semi-trailers.
