ITALY’s infrastructure manager, Italian Rail Network (RFI), has brought into operation two additional tracks between Genoa Voltri and Genoa Sampierdarena stations as part of the Genoa Hub/Terzo Valico dei Giovi project. Completion of the scheme separates long-distance passenger and freight trains from local and regional traffic.
The project was carried out by Webuild with Italian State Railways (FS) subsidiary Italferr as the project supervisor and manager and involved the construction of a new double-track line to the north of the existing coastal line.
The project covers 8.5km and incorporates the existing Doria and Monte Gazzo tunnels and the new Polcevera tunnel, and included the construction of two new evacuation and rescue points. The new line has a maximum speed of 160km/h compared with 100km/h on the coastal route.
Two single-track tunnels are under construction to connect the Polcevera tunnel to the new 53km 250km/h line being built from Genoa north to Novi Ligure and via Rivalta Scrivia to Tortona. The 8.5km northern section of the line between Rivalta Scrivia and Tortona opened in January 2024. This will enable freight trains to travel from the port of Genoa Pra' to Milan without having to pass through the busy Genoa area.
