SWEDISH operator A-Train, which runs the Arlanda Express service between Stockholm Central and Arlanda Airport, has awarded a SEK 350m ($US 420m) contract to Stadler for seven Flirt EMUs, with an option for one more train. The order includes a 15-year maintenance contract.
Manufacturing of the trains will start at Stadler’s St Gallen Rhine Valley plant at the end of 2026 and the trains will enter service from the end of 2029.
The 165m-long six-car EMUs will be almost twice as long as the existing trains they will replace and will have 323 seats, which Stadler says will increase the seating capacity by more than 50%.
The 200km/h Flirt trains will be step-free, and they will have wheelchair spaces, large luggage stacks and a customer service counter. The trains will have 1150mm and 760mm entrance heights to accommodate different station platform heights.
The trains will be designed to cope with the harsh Swedish winters. The interior design will follow the Nordic style of the A-Train lounge at Stockholm Central station, which is characterised by bright and open spaces as well as comfortable seating and modern furnishings. There will be different seating areas onboard, such as lounge sofa seats for group travellers or seating areas for a quiet and relaxing journey.
