MASSACHUSETTS Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has signed an option with Hyundai Rotem for an additional 41 double-deck commuter rail coaches.

MBTA’s initial order was for 80 double-deck coaches. Hyundai Rotem has already delivered 76 vehicles, of which 64 are in passenger service. “The remaining coaches are undergoing final testing and are expected to enter service by the end of 2024,” MBTA says.

The original contract with Hyundai Rotem was valued at $US 278.6m. This increased to about $US 305m, following the purchase of three additional coaches, vehicle enhancements, and the purchase of capital spare parts. MBTA told IRJ that the new order for 41 coaches is valued at $US 168.2m.

Investing in new trains was highlighted in MBTA’s November 2023 Capital Needs Assessment, which estimated that $US 24.5bn was needed for repairs and replacements across the network, of which rolling stock accounted for $US 2.4bn.

“As we continue to see a strong return of our ridership on commuter rail, investing in our rolling stock allows us to not only improve service levels but provide the public with a more comfortable and reliable experience,” says MBTA CEO and general manager, Mr Phillip Eng.

The new coaches have seats for up to 179 passengers per car, designated areas for passengers with disabilities, and improved accessible toilets with hands-free taps. The coaches have real-time information systems with automated announcements and message displays, USB ports at tables, LED lighting and bicycle racks.

Safety features include defibrillators (AEDs) in driving trailers, emergency intercoms, anti-slip paint in vestibules, and Braille signage.
