LISBON Metro has signed a €134m contract with Stadler Rail Valencia for the supply of 24 three-car ML-24 metro trains. The contract includes an option for the supply of 12 additional trains.
Procurement of the 49.6m-long trains is co-financed with €45m from the Sustainable 2030 Programme, with the remainder of the funding coming from the government’s Environment Fund. The contract term is 54 months, which will begin once approval is granted for the contract by Portugal’s Court of Auditors.
The new trains will operate at Grade of Automation 2 (GoA2) using CBTC, which is being installed by Siemens on the three-line Lisbon Metro network as well as the existing fleet of 70 trains and 14 ML-21 trains that Stadler is delivering under a contract awarded in 2021.
The ML-24 trains will also help meet the forecast increase in demand following the conclusion of the 2km Circle Line project to connect the Green and Yellow lines and reconfigure metro services in the city centre. A project to extend the Red Line by 4km from its western terminus at São Sebastião is also underway.
The contract with Stadler was signed following the launch of an international tender in November 2023. CRRC Tangshan was announced as the lowest bidder for the contract in April, but ultimately did not prevail.
