The order is divided into 30 six-car regional commuter trains and 10 three-car intra-city trains together with 15 years of maintenance. The contract includes an option for another 90 cars and two more years of maintenance.
“Our partnership with Bombardier Transportation is to supply 100% locally manufactured trains for the entire Delhi - Ghaziabad - Meerut RRTS project with over 83% local content, which will be a shot in the arm for the Indian government’s Make in India initiative,” says Mr Vinay Kumar Singh, NCRTC’s managing director.
The trains will be manufactured at Bombardier’s Vadodara sites in India. They will be designed at the Global Engineering and Technology Centre in Hyderabad and local teams will provide maintenance services through two project and maintenance depots established by NCRTC in Duhai and Modipuram.
The 82km Delhi - Ghaziabad - Meerut line will have 24 stations and a design speed of 180km/h. The trains will reduce the journey time from Delhi to Meerut to less than 60 minutes and ridership of around 800,000 passengers/day is forecast. Local services will be provided on the 21km section between Meerut South and Modipuram Depot station.
NCRTC awarded L&T Construction’s Heavy Civil Infrastructure subsidiary two contracts in April to construct part of the line.
