THE Ministry of Railways in Bangladesh has formed a committee to review technical and other specifications for a fleet of 30 metre-gauge diesel locomotives that are to be purchased for Bangladesh Railways (BR).
According to the ministry, the new locomotives will be procured as part of the project to convert the metre-gauge Chattogram - Dohazari line to dual 1000mm/1676mm gauge.
The committee will review draft specifications prepared by BR, taking into consideration locomotive and component performance, energy efficiency, the availability of spare parts, and suitability for the operating environment in Bangladesh. A report will be submitted to the Ministry of Railways.
Sheikh Moinuddin, special assistant to the chief advisor to the Ministry of Railways, has been appointed as convenor of the committee, with an additional director general of BR acting as secretary.
The other members of the committee are the BR director general, the managing director of Dhaka Mass Transit and a professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.
