TWO tenders have been launched to progress the Rail Baltica project to construct a new 250km/h standard-gauge line to connect the three Baltic states with Poland. Lithuania’s infrastructure manager, LTG Infra, which is responsible for implementing the Rail Baltica project in Lithuania, has launched a tender for design services for the 54km section between Panevėžys and the border with Latvia.
Last year LTG Infra signed contracts for construction work on a 114km section between Kaunas and Panevėžys, where preparatory and construction activities are underway, including tracklaying on the most advanced 9km section. Design work is also in progress on the section between the Polish border and Kaunas, where nearly 100km of lines will be upgraded.
According to Egidijus Lazauskas, CEO of LTG Group, the aim is to select a contractor and start design work on the 54km section this year. Design tenders are underway for infrastructure maintenance depots in Panevėžys and Kaunas, as well as for regional stations in Jonava and Gustonys.
Estonian depot
Separately, Rail Baltic Estonia has launched a tender for the construction of a 41,679m2 rolling stock depot to be built on a 5ha site in Rae municipality, Harju county, by the end of 2028. The facility will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and operation of the Rail Baltica high-speed fleet in Estonia.
The tender, with an estimated value of €41.33m, covers both detailed design and construction of the depot building and its internal maintenance platforms. The deadline for bids is March 10, with contract signing expected by the end of April.
“The depot will enable the simultaneous servicing of up to six high-speed trains or twelve regional trains and will bring all rolling stock maintenance and readiness functions together into a single integrated whole,” says Lauri Ulm, technical director and member of Rail Baltic Estonia’s management board.
