AMTRAK carried 32.8 million passengers, an "all-time" ridership record, in its fiscal year 2024, which ended on September 30. The railway says its performance reflects the continuing growth in demand for passenger services in the United States.

Overall ridership was up 15% on 2023, Amtrak reports in its preliminary results released on December 3. The railway recorded $US 2.5bn in ticket revenue, a 9% increase, while overall revenue was up by 7% at $US 3.6bn. Adjusted operating earnings improved by 9% year-on-year to $US 705.2m.

Amtrak says that it invested $US 4.5bn in major infrastructure and fleet projects during the year as it pursues its goal of doubling ridership by 2040.

“Breaking our ridership record is just the beginning,” says Amtrak CEO, Mr Stephen Gardner. “This record ridership shows that travellers throughout the US want efficient travel options, and we are committed to meeting that demand. Through bold investments, strong partnerships with states and host railroads, and dedicated planning, we are doubling down on our vision to connect more people and communities like never before.”
