Agreement to investigate Somport Tunnel reopening signed
SPAIN’s Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) and France’s New Aquitaine Region have signed an agreement to study the reopening of the Somport Tunnel on the cross-border Pau - Canfranc - Zaragoza line.

IRJ IN-BRIEF - Projects: Laos-China final tunnel complete; Lisbon awards metro extension contract; KiwiRail electrification contract
Laos: The Laos-China Railway Company (LCRC) has finished the last of 75 tunnels for its 414km rail project. Around 148km of track has been laid and 120km of tunnel has been bored since construction began in December 2016, and expected to begin operation in December 2021.

Austria waives track access charges as passenger subsidy ends

DB Cargo announces new services from Antwerp and Rotterdam
GERMAN Rail’s (DB) freight subsidiary DB Cargo has announced that it will offer new services from December linking the ports of Rotterdam, Netherlands, and Antwerp, Belgium, with economic hubs in Germany and Austria.

Amtrak requests extra funding to avoid further service cutbacks and job losses
AMTRAK says it requires up to an additional $US 4.857bn from the United States government to support the company and employees for the remainder of the current fiscal year due to the impact of Covid-19. The railway has also identified $US 5.193bn in additional need as part of an economic recovery proposal intended to support the US’ recovery from the pandemic.
