MBTA commits to major commuter rail upgrades
THE Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) Fiscal and Management Control Board unanimously passed five resolutions on November 4, launching a process to upgrade Boston’s 610km commuter rail network to something more akin to an electrified metro, with a price tag of up to $US 28.9bn.

Union Pacific: on the rail road to ATO
Enhanced energy management systems, smart end-of-train devices, and moving block signalling are all under development at United States Class 1 railway Union Pacific as it embarks on a journey to autonomous operation. INFRASTRUCTURE Ontario and Metrolinx have awarded the Mobilinx consortium a $US 4.6bn, 30-year contract to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the 18km Hurontario light rail project in Ontario.

Genesee & Wyoming announces closure of Huron Central Railway
GENESEE & Wyoming Canada (GWC) has announced that it will cease operation on the Huron Central Railway in early 2020 after failing to secure sufficient capital investment from government to keep the 278km line in northern Ontario open.

Metra unveils 2020 operating budget, along with capital improvements
CHICAGO commuter rail operator Metra has unveiled a proposed $US 827.4m operating budget for 2020 which will minimise the increase in expenses and not require a fare increase. The operator also outlined $US 480.5m in proposed capital spending, including major investments in locomotives and coaches, stations, bridges and yards.

Train speeds could be increased on New York Subway according preliminary report
NEW York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) published preliminary findings from its Train Speed and Safety Task Force on October 8 which show that line speeds on some sections of the New York Subway could be increased by as much as 50%.

Chicago breaks ground on Red and Purple line modernisation project
A ground-breaking ceremony was held in Chicago on October 2 by the city’s mayor Ms Lori Lightfoot and Chicago Transit Authority’s (CTA) president Mr Dorval Carter Jr for phase one of the Red and Purple Modernisation (RPM) project.
