SPAIN has signed a grant agreement with Ukrainian Railways (UZ) to support a project to develop gauge-changing bogie technology for freight wagons.
UZ, Spanish engineering company Tria, and Spanish infrastructure manager Adif will develop a new bogie which is able to operate on both 1435mm and 1520mm-gauge track.
The system will be based on similar technology used in Spain and is intended to enable direct movement of freight across borders, ending the need to change bogies or tranship consignments at the break of gauge.
Spain has provided a grant of €5.48m to support the project. The funding will be administered by government lending agency Instituto de Crédito Oficial (ICO).
UZ is the first Ukrainian company allocated funding under a €200m agreement signed by the two governments in 2025. The announcement was made during a visit to Spain by Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, earlier this month.
