ITALIAN State Railways (FS) has teamed up with Almaviva, a leading Italian information and communications technology company, to launch the Sagitta consortium, which aims to offer advanced digital solutions for transport and logistics projects in markets across the world.
Sagitta will harness the expertise of both FS and Almaviva to offer services in traffic and transport planning and management, digital twin and health monitoring infrastructure, multimodal integrated transport, including Mobility as a Service (MaaS), ticketing, and infomobility.
In Italy, Sagitta will seek to accelerate the development of digital infrastructure in strategically and nationally important sustainable transport, tourism, intermodal logistics and infrastructure projects. It will also target the supply of digital solutions to transport and logistics projects in Europe, North America, Latin America, the Middle East, North Africa and India.
Francesco De Leo, chief global strategy and international officer at FS, has been appointed as chairman of the consortium, while Smeraldo Fiorentini, deputy CEO of Almaviva’s Transportation & Logistics Division, has been named managing director. The announcement of the formal partnership builds on an initial agreement signed by the two firms in 2024.
FS’ chief technology, innovation and digital officer, Massimiliano Garri, explains that bringing together the management of both physical and digital infrastructure is an increasingly complex challenge for FS. He says the partnership with Almaviva will help FS to “effectively unite these two dimensions.”
