CANADIAN National (CN) has unveiled a new medium-power diesel-battery hybrid locomotive developed in collaboration with Knoxville Locomotive Works (KLW). The pilot locomotive is the latest to be developed under the Class 1 railway’s programme to achieve net-zero emissions.
The 2.35MW hybrid unit is based on a CN low-power diesel-electric locomotive operating in yards and on branch lines. Powered by a 100% biofuel-ready diesel engine and equipped with an upgraded control system, it offers a power increase of up to 60%. The hybrid system can achieve around a 50% reduction in fuel consumption compared with a diesel-electric locomotive used in similar operating conditions.
Under a pilot project to evaluate its potential to enhance operational efficiency and offer fuel savings, the locomotive will undergo testing in various operating conditions across CN’s network over the next six months. Tests will take place at several CN yards and branch lines, including in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Testing will also eventually include operations in cold weather conditions in western Canada.
CN says a phased approach will enable it to evaluate efficiency and operating protocols for the locomotive. It expects that the initiative will help drive the advancement of hybrid technology in its locomotives and contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
