IRJ at InnoTrans 2024: Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) signed several agreements during this week’s show, including a shadow operator contract with German Rail (DB). Under the partnership, DB will undertake a limited time service agreement for the Haramain high-speed railway.
SAR also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Indra Sistemas, Spain, which will involve establishing joint research and development facilities, including a centre of excellence, in Saudi Arabia. SAR says the partnership underscores its commitment to embracing digital transformation.
Another highlight was the signing of a MoU with Salcef, Italy, which aims to enhance track maintenance activities and encourage collaboration in research and development to address challenges posed by Saudi Arabia’s high temperatures and sandy environment.
SAR also signed a contract with EULYNX, a consortium of European infrastructure managers, which aims to reduce the lifecycle costs of signalling. In Saudi Arabia the group will work to establish a standardisation roadmap for signalling systems within the country.
In addition, SAR also held what it describes as productive discussions with Progress Rail, Voith, Wabtec, Accenture, Talgo and Hitachi Rail over possible future collaborations, including leveraging local capabilities. Discussions with Stadler included the use of its hydrogen traction technology in Saudi Arabia.
