SPANISH national operator Renfe has announced the appointment of Álvaro Fernández Heredia as its new president.
The Official State Gazette confirmed his appointment on January 15, following the decision made by the Spanish cabinet at the recommendation of minister of transport and sustainable mobility, Óscar Puente.
Fernández Heredia succeeds Raül Blanco, who led the company since February 2023. A civil engineer with a doctorate in Transport Infrastructure from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Fernández Heredia brings two decades of expertise in the transport sector and most recently served as secretary general for sustainable transport at the Ministry of Transport.
His professional background spans consulting, research, and academia, including serving as a professor of transport planning. He has been a visiting scholar at institutions such as the Politecnico di Torino and the University of the West of England. His academic contributions include over 30 publications on transport.
In public administration, Fernández Heredia managed the Madrid Municipal Transport Company (EMT) and Valladolid City Buses (AUVASA) for a combined eight years. He is also a member of several transport committees at both national and European levels.
