TOURAINE Transport Association (SMT), which oversees public transport in the French city of Tours, has awarded CAF a contract to supply 19 Urbos LRVs for the city’s second light rail line.
The 42m-long Urbos LRVs will each have capacity for 280 passengers. They will be deployed on the 12.5km Line 2, which is scheduled to open in 2028. The new fleet will also be able to operate on the 14.8km Line 1, which opened in 2013 and has a fleet of 21 Alstom Citadis 402 LRVs.
In addition, the CAF Urbos LRVs will be equipped with an onboard energy storage system to enable operation on sections of the network without overhead electrification - including the 2km of Line 1 between Tours station and Place Choiseul in the city centre.
Running from La Riche to Chambray-lès-Tours via the city centre, Line 2 will have 22 stops and will serve two hospitals as well as and university sites. Following a public enquiry which ended on October 31 2024, official permission to begin construction is expected to be granted during first half of this year, enabling work to start in mid-2025.
