THE government of Peru and the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) have signed a technical cooperation agreement to support studies for the proposed Barranca - Trujillo railway.
The agreement provides $US 4m in grant funding for the feasibility study for the new line, representing around 37% of the study’s total estimated cost of $US 10.8m.
The proposed 355km line would link Barranca and Trujillo, north of Lima on the Pacific coast. It will improve logistics connectivity between major ports at Chancay, , Chimbote and Salaverry, as well as providing new passenger services.
According to the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the railway could benefit around 1.8 million people, improve regional mobility, reduce freight transport costs and strengthen connectivity along Peru’s main north-south transport axis. The project also aims to relieve pressure on the Pan-American Highway, which in Peru forms the backbone of the coastal logistics network between Lima and northern cities.
