In October 2016, Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) and the Bombela Concession Company shortlisted Bombardier Transportation South Africa, CRRC E-Loco Supply (CRRC Zhuzhou South Africa and Matsete Basadi), and Egoli Rail Consortium (Alstom South Africa, EOH Intelligent Infrastructure and Ubumbano) for a contract to supply 12 four-car EMUs to supplement the existing fleet of 24 four-car Bombardier Electrostar EMUs currently in operation.

Final proposals were submitted in October, but it emerged during evaluation of the bids that none of the offers would meet the requirements of the tender. This means no preferred bidder will be selected and Gautrain and Bombela will now look at alternative options for delivering additional capacity. This could include restarting the procurement process.

Additional trains are required to increase capacity during the morning and evening peaks, when some services experience overcrowding.
