URUGUAY’s government has outlined new priorities for its planned national rail masterplan, including a greater focus on network expansion and cross-border connectivity.
Speaking at a recent high-level seminar on the future of the country’s railway, minister of transport and public works, Lucía Etcheverry, said Uruguay is entering a “new stage” of rail development guided by the rail masterplan launched in 2025, which aims to consolidate recent investments and expand the network to support economic growth.
Etcheverry identified development of the northern corridor to Rivera, on the border with Brazil, as a key priority. This is intended to enhance international rail freight connectivity and position rail as a core component of Uruguay’s logistics strategy.
Government officials indicate that the rail masterplan launched last year will define a phased pipeline of projects covering infrastructure upgrades, new lines and network enhancements. While no contract awards or project costs have recently been disclosed, the masterplan is expected to underpin future procurement across key rail systems, particularly track.
