SWEDEN’s Transport Administration (Trafikverket) has awarded state-owned operator SJ a contract to operate night train services to upper Norrland from December 2026 to 2028.
The agreement ensures the continued operation of daily services between Stockholm and Umeå and Stockholm and Narvik. Under the new contract, the Stockholm - Narvik service will continue direct, ending the need for passengers travelling to Kiruna and stations to Narvik to change trains in Boden. These trains also stop in Umeå and Luleå.
SJ has operated the service since 2024, succeeding Norwegian operator Vy Tåg.
Trafikverket awarded Talgo a contract to supply 91 coaches to use on the service in April. The new trains, which will be hauled by Vectron locomotives supplied by Siemens Mobility, will be introduced in 2030, replacing the current fleet which is more than 40 years old.
“Night train services to and from northern Sweden and Norway have an important function for both Swedish and international travellers,” says Jonas Abrahamsson, CEO of SJ AB. “Demand is very high, and increasing. SJ would like to be involved in developing the service further. For us, it is an assignment that we understand comes with a great responsibility.”
