PORTO Metro has awarded a consortium led by Ayesa, working alongside fellow Portuguese engineering firm Grid, to lead the design of the Metro Porto 3.0 expansion plan to add four new lines to the city’s public transport network under an investment worth €1bn.
The planned expansion will add 37km and 38 new stations to the network by 2030, serving Porto as well as the neighbouring districts of Gondomar, Trofa, Maia, and Matosinhos.
The consortium will be responsible for providing design and environmental services for the four new lines, which are a mixture of light rail and bus rapid transit (BRT) projects. They comprise:
- the 6·9km Gondomar Line to link Estádio do Dragão on lines A, B, E and F to Souto in the southeast, serving eight new stops
- the 6.6km São Mamede Line, which would run from Senhora da Hora on lines A, B, C, E and F to IPO on Line D, serving eight stops
- the 10.2km Ismai - Muro - Trofa line, comprising light rail from Ismai, the terminus of Line C, to Muro, serving one intermediate stop, and BRT from Muro north to Trofa. The line would run along a former railway alignment towards Guimarães, which closed in 2002, and
- the 13km Maia II line to connect Verdes on lines B and E with Roberto Frias, near the northern terminus of Line D, serving 16 stops. This could be built either as a light rail line or BRT, with the BRT option likely to extend the line to 14.3km and 18 stops.
Porto Metro announced its ambitious expansion plan and the launch of the design tender in October 2023.
Ayesa recently oversaw construction management of the 3.1km Porto Metro Yellow Line extension, which opened on June 28 2024. It also led detailed design of the 6.4km Ruby Line, construction of which is underway.
