COLOGNE Transport Authority (KVB) has selected Stadler as the winner of a tender to supply 132 high-floor LRVs. The contract is worth around €700m and the first vehicles are scheduled for delivery in 2029.
The order includes the supply of 34 10m-long intermediate modules that will enable the LRVs to be extended to around 70m and accommodate up to 470 passengers. They will also be able to operate in multiple, using a quick-release coupler.
The 1435mm-gauge LRVs will operate under 750V dc overhead electrification.
"The city council's approval of this important project gives us planning security,” says Stefanie Haaks, KVB CEO. “In view of a challenging budget situation, we are very grateful for the financial support, which sends a positive signal for the implementation of the mobility transition and strong public transport.”
Drivers will benefit from a collision warning system and a rear-view mirror video system to eliminate blind spots. An integrated passenger-counting system with evaluation software will assist operational planning, while hybrid wheels featuring aluminium tyres will reduce both weight and operational noise.
Stadler says a special energy-efficient air-conditioning system will help to provide an ambient environment for passengers, while wider aisles and full-width gangways will help to maximise onboard space and eight to 10 doors on each side of the LRV will enable rapid boarding and alighting.
Under the contract, Stadler will supply spare parts and provide service and support for the new fleet, including preventative maintenance and technical advice, over the course of the 30-year life of the new vehicles.
The first 10 LRVs and five connecting modules are scheduled for delivery in 2029 for pre-series operation. Series delivery will commence in mid-2030, running to the end of 2032. The new LRVs will gradually replace KVB’s fleet of series 2200/2300 and 5100 LRVs and will be deployed on lines 4, 13 and 18 of the Cologne network.
