BRESCIA Mobility has awarded a €326m contract to construct and equip the Italian city’s new T2 light rail line to the Temporary Consortium of Companies (RTI) led by Manelli Impresa, alongside Hitachi Rail and Alstom.
The double-track line will run for 11.3km from Pendolina in the northwest to Fiera in the southwest. The new line will feature 21 stops and two depots - one main site at Fiera and an auxiliary site at Pendolina. 8.1km of the route will be built in a dedicated right of way with the remainder running in mixed traffic on the street.
Manelli Impresa will lead the construction and oversee civil works, including final design and safety coordination. The firm’s share of the work is valued at €161m.
Power to the 18 LRVs, which Hitachi Rail is supplying, will be provided using conventional overhead contact wire on an 8.2km section of the line. The LRVs will use battery power when operating on the remaining 3.1km to minimise visual impact in urban areas.
In addition to the LRVs, Hitachi Rail will deliver telecommunications and signalling systems under its €77m contract. The vehicles will be manufactured in Reggio Calabria and each will accommodate up to 216 passengers, offering 52 seats and incorporating what Hitachi describes as advanced noise and vibration reduction and climate control systems that adapt to passenger volume.
The fleet will also be equipped with an advanced driver assistance system (Adas), which includes anti-collision capabilities, enhancing operational safety.
Alstom will supply systems and infrastructure, including electric traction, public lighting, traffic control systems, and the Spiroll automatic tensioning device for the overhead line. Work will be carried out by its System & Infrastructure team in Rome and its traction technology centre in Valmadrera. The contract is worth €88m.
"The new tramway project will run through a complex urban context that includes historic areas, zones undergoing transformation, and districts in need of redevelopment,” says Sergio Onofrio Manelli, CEO of Manelli Impresa. “Its construction is a major opportunity to enhance the quality of urban space, aligned with the strategies of the Territorial Governance Plan (PGT).”
