SNCF Voyageurs, the passenger operating business of French National Railways (SNCF), has confirmed a €520m order with Alstom for an additional 35 six-car double-deck RER NG EMUs for Paris RER Line E. The contract is an option from a 2017 framework agreement.
The contract was placed by SNCF Voyageurs on behalf of greater Paris transport authority Île-de-France Mobility, which is entirely financing the order. The agreement takes the total number of RER NGs on order to 166 following the award of an initial firm order for 71 trains in 2017 and a subsequent agreement for 66 sets in 2023. The total consists of 130 trains for RER Line E and 36 for RER Line D. The first Line E trains entered service in November 2023 and the first trains for Line D will begin operation by the end of this year.
The trains have a maximum speed of 140km/h and are equipped with eight motor bogies. The 112m-long trains have capacity for 1563 passengers, including 501 seated, and Alstom says they are designed to maximise capacity and passenger flow across three areas within the train.
Nine of Alstom’s 16 French sites are contributing to production of the train, with design and assembly taking place at Valenciennes Petite-Forêt and Crespin.
