Prasa launches bid to acquire additional Afro locomotives
THE embattled Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) has presented a business case to parliament to acquire the remaining Afro 4000 and Afro Dual locomotives built by Vossloh Spain (now Stadler Rail Valencia), which were ordered but never delivered after it was discovered they exceeded the loading gauge on part of the country’s network.

Freight tram trials planned in Karslruhe
THE German city of Karlsruhe, in collaboration with Karlsruhe Transport (VBK) and Albtal Transport (AVG), has announced plans to begin trials of freight-carrying LRVs and tram-trains by 2022. It is hoped that the initiative will reduce road congestion and pollution in the city.

Crossrail opening delayed until first half of 2022 as costs increase again
CROSSRAIL Ltd has announced that the 21km central underground section of the new Elizabeth Line in central London between Paddington, Stratford and Abbey Wood will not be ready to open until the first half of 2022 and could cost an additional £450m to complete, a further blow to the project which was originally scheduled to open in December 2018.

MASSACHUSETTS Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has announced the lowest bidder for a $US 403m contract for work on the Middleborough Secondary & New Bedford Main Line (MS/NBML) section of its South Coast Rail project, following the launch of tendering on June 25.
